March 2009
For Microsoft Access, SQL Server,
Visual Studio .NET, and VB6 Professionals

Hi Everyone,
Early signs of spring are appearing and I'm looking
forward to speaking at the Denver Access User Group and
hopefully doing a little skiing. Hope you will be there if
you're in the area.
As organizations cut their budgets, large
ticket IT projects are disappearing. Curiously, we are
seeing a significant increase in activity around smaller
desktop and web solutions. Tight deadlines, rapid
application development methodology, and iterative
design-development cycles seem to be the best approach. Read
about our experiences and provide feedback about your own
experiences in my
blog.
This month's newsletter covers a variety of topics,
including from Microsoft's publication of a video interview
of me on Microsoft Access and migration issues, a paper
discussing the cool features we like in Access 2007, the
release of updates to three of our products, and information
on some of our custom software solutions for event
management. To get our latest news as soon as they're
announced, sign up for our RSS feed from our
blog.
Best wishes,
Luke Chung

Paper: Top Features of Microsoft Access 2007 That Aren't
Available in Prior Versions
There
are many experienced Microsoft Access developers who
continue to resist the migration to Access 2007. While there
are some changes that are cumbersome, there are many new
features that justify the migration. Access 2007 lets you
create applications with features that in many cases would
be impossible to provide in prior versions. Read this
detailed paper about the many
features
we like in Microsoft Access 2007.

Access Tip:
Microsoft Access Subforms Should Reference the Control
Rather than Field for Master Link Fields
We
recently published a tip on how to
Easily Synchronize Two Related Subforms on a Form
without writing code. In that tip, we recommended that the
Link Master Field of a subform should reference the control
name rather that its field name.
We received some inquiries about this and wrote another
tip which includes a sample database to explain this
recommendation in more detail. Basically, if the value
that's used as the Link Master Field can be edited, it's
critical to use the
control name for the Link Master Field of a subform.
Otherwise, one can easily see and edit inconsistent data.
